Web apps built around how your business runs.

We design and build custom web applications: the logins, dashboards, directories and order flows that a regular website can't handle. We also run our own studio on software we built, so we know what living with it is like.

The short version

What web app development means.

A web app is software that runs in a browser, with accounts, stored data or logic that changes based on what someone does. We build them for businesses whose work no longer fits a website form and a spreadsheet, and we recommend something simpler when something simpler will do.

Capabilities and evidence

What we build, and where you can see it.

Each row points to real work. Where a project is ours, we say so. Where it is private, we describe it and don't link to it.

CapabilityWhat it meansWhere you can see it
Custom business portals A private, signed-in place to run part of your business, with different access for different roles. Media City OS (ours): our internal studio system covering invoicing, autopay, hosting and campaigns. Private, so there is no public link.
Membership platforms Member accounts, sign-up and access to members-only features or information. Burbank Chamber of Commerce: member log-in and a new-member application. Friends of the Burbank Public Library (opens in a new tab): paid memberships online.
Business directories Searchable listings of businesses or organizations, built from structured records. Burbank Chamber: searchable member directory. Burbank Cares (opens in a new tab): Burbank's nonprofit directory, with community events.
AI-enabled tools Features where a language model helps someone answer a question or work through a task, with clear limits. Ask Burbank (opens in a new tab) (ours, private preview): a local guide with an AI concierge. AI Pathology Consultation (opens in a new tab): a restricted-access consultation workspace with structured output and cited literature.
Admin dashboards One screen where staff can see what needs attention and act on it, without digging through separate tools. Media City OS (ours, private). Hacobian Financials (ours, in-house and private): a dashboard, budgets and debt tracking.
Online booking Customers choose a service and book it from your site, with prices and appointment lengths up front. Queen of the Nile: every service has a price, a duration and a Book Now button.
Custom integrations Business rules that connect a form or process to another system, so the two work as one. Pinkelicious Catering: lunch box ordering enforces a minimum and delivery date rules, then hands off to checkout.
API integrations Your app talks directly to an outside service for payments, data or AI. Pinkelicious Catering: Stripe checkout. Hacobian Financials (ours): Supabase and Anthropic's Claude API.
Database-driven apps Records stored and synced in a database, so everyone sees the same current information. Hacobian Financials (ours): data syncs through Supabase, so the same numbers appear in any browser.
Interactive tools Someone enters information and the tool gives back something useful right away. Health-e-Habits (opens in a new tab): enter a video game title and get a five-category report for families. Forever QR (opens in a new tab) (ours): a free QR code generator.
Do you need an app?

Custom software isn't always the answer.

Custom code costs more up front and has to be looked after. Here are the three routes we talk through with clients.

A website

Right when people mostly read, compare and contact you. See website design.

A packaged add-on

Right when a standard feature fits. On our hosting plans, Appointment Booking starts at $15 a month, Membership Portal at $25 and Client Portal at $35.

A custom web app

Right when your process is what makes you different, or the rules, roles and data don't fit a standard product. Read about the benefits of custom web apps.

Cost and timing

From $10,800, in phases you can review.

Our public calculator starts custom apps at $10,800, and they typically take 8–14 weeks. Your proposal sets out the features, the timeline and one fixed price, so you know the cost before work starts.

We start by mapping how the work really happens today, including the awkward exceptions. Then we agree on a first version, build it, and let you try it on real tasks before it goes live. See our process for how projects run.

Questions

Straight answers.

Custom web apps start at $10,800 in our public cost calculator, and the final cost depends on accounts, data and integrations. Once the scope is clear, you get one fixed price in a written proposal.

Web apps typically take 8–14 weeks, from the start of the build to launch. The biggest variables are how many kinds of user the app has, how many outside systems it connects to, and how quickly decisions get made on your side.

You need a website if visitors mostly read and contact you, and a web app if people need accounts, their own data or a process that changes based on what they do. Many projects sit in between, and a packaged add-on or a Wix feature may be enough. We will tell you if it is.

Usually yes, if the tool offers an API or another supported way to connect. We have built with Stripe for payments, Supabase for data and Anthropic's Claude API for AI features. We check the tool's documentation and limits during scoping, before we commit to a price.

Yes, where it does a useful job and its limits are clear. Our own projects include an AI concierge for Burbank and an AI advisor in a finance app, and we built a pathology consultation workspace that cites literature and describes itself as a consultation workflow, not a diagnostic authority. We design for human review wherever a mistake would be costly.

Ownership is set out in your written proposal before any work starts, so there are no surprises later. Custom code is a standard codebase, not tied to a site builder, and we recommend that accounts holding your data sit in your business's name.

Most apps need ongoing care, so we scope that with you before launch. Our maintenance plans run from $50 to $200 a month for smaller updates, and larger features are quoted as their own projects.

Some of them, yes. The table on this page links to everything public. Private systems such as Media City OS and Hacobian Financials aren't publicly accessible, so we describe them instead of linking to them, and we say which ones those are.
